The waste and recycling industry has traditionally been a male-dominated business sector, however, this is changing.
In the last few years, more and more women have decided to buck this trend by choosing to pursue a career in the industry. Equality, diversity and inclusion begun to make its way through this sector thanks to business associations that strive to ensure everyone feels welcomed in the industry sector.
One of these is Kwinana Industries Council (KIC), an incorporated business association with membership drawn from the Kwinana Industrial Area (KIA). Among the many projects, KIC has launched an Endorsed Program called KIC iWomen Project, of which Sims Metal is a proud sponsor.
The program, targeted towards 32 VET students (Year 10s), aims to build awareness that careers in industry are indeed achievable to women as well. The program gives young women the opportunity to see what the industry really looks like, but also to identify the employment and career pathways in the Kwinana Industrial Area (KIA).
It runs twice a year, the first seven days of the program are held in May. This includes:
- Site tour visits to a range of industries in the KIA to discover the facilities, but also meet with current employees in a range of roles.
- Workshops including: resume writing, mock interviews, social media, health & wellbeing, personal & career development and many more.
The first tour of this year was held Wednesday 18th May, at our Sims Metal Kwinana site!

The students will graduate on the evening of the last day of the program, Monday 30th May, at a ceremony with their parents, school and industry representatives, including Sims Metal.
